Όσο περισσότερη φωτοβολταϊκή και αιολική ενέργεια συνδέεται στο δίκτυο τόσο πιο δύσκολη και ακριβή γίνεται εξασφάλιση σταθερότητας του δικτύου. Η ενδιάμεση αποθήκευση ενέργειας γίνεται γρήγορα βασικό εργαλείο, για να κρατηθούν οι διακυμάνσεις του δικτύου σε διαχειρίσιμα όρια. Επιπλέον, καθώς μειώνονται οι εγγυημένες διαφορικές τιμές τα οικιακά συστήματα αποθήκευσης ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας που αυξάνουν την αυτοπαραγωγή γίνονται πιο αναγκαία από άποψη επιχειρηματικού πλάνου. Η ενδιάμεση αποθήκευση ενέργειας αυξάνει την αυτοπαραγωγή της παραγόμενης φωτοβολταϊκή και/ή αιολικής ενέργειας. Το επόμενο φυσιολογικό βήμα είναι 100% αυτοπαραγωγή και ανεξαρτησία από το δίκτυο.
