Victron smallBMS: A simple and low-cost alternative to the VE.Bus BMS V2

The Victron smallBMS can replace the VE.Bus BMS V2 in many applications. However, it is not suitable for use with VE.Bus MultiPlus and Quattro converters/chargers: it does not have a VE.Bus interface. The smallBMS is intended for use with Victron Smart LiFePo4 batteries with circular M8 sockets.

The smallBMS has two outputs, similar to the VE.Bus BMS V2.

Based on the condition of the battery or batteries, the BMS:

  • Generates a pre-alarm signal to notify of an impending cell under low voltage conditions.
  • Disables inverting to VE.Bus inverters or inverters/chargers via VE.Bus and disconnects other loads via the 'Load Disconnect' terminal in case a cell is in a low voltage state.
  • Disables charging on VE.Bus inverters or inverters/chargers with VE.Bus and disables other chargers via the "Charge Disconnect" terminal in case of overvoltage, under overtemperature conditions.
  • Remote on/off.
  • Ability to disable VE.Direct and VE.Can solar chargers via GX device.
  • Allows the VE.Bus inverter/charger to be controlled by multiple devices such as Digital Multi Control, VE.Bus Smart dongle and/or a GX device.
  • Alternate source that allows a GX device to remain powered in the event of a system shutdown.

1. ON when the L and H terminals are interconnected

2. ON when the L terminal is pulled to battery minus (V <3.5 V)

3. ON when the H terminal is high (2.9 V

4. OFF in all other conditions
