Victron LiFePO4 battery 12,8V/100Ah – Smart

The Victron LiFePO4O Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP) Battery is the safest of the main types of lithium ion batteries. The nominal voltage of an LFP cell is 3,2V (lead-acid batteries: 2V/cell). Therefore, a battery LFP 12,8 V consists of 4 elements connected in series. and a 25,6V battery consists of 8 cells connected in series.

The Victron LFP battery does not need to be fully charged. Lifetime is even slightly improved on a partial charge instead of a full charge. This is a major advantage of LFP compared to lead-acid. Other advantages are wide operating temperature range, excellent cycling performance, low internal resistance and high efficiency.

Advantages of the Victron LiFePO4 battery 12,8V/100Ah – Smart

  • Absolutely safe (no risk of ignition, no fumes)
  • Long life: Over 2-2500 full charge discharge cycles. For photovoltaics, it can exceed 5000 cycles, depending on the use.
  • High charging speed (0.3 to 1C), This means that charging can be done during the day, not only at night.
  • Minimal losses during charging / discharging
  • Compared to lead batteries, it has half the volume and 1/3 the weight.
  • Protected by BMS from over-charging or over-discharging, which means that we take advantage of all the stored energy, without damaging the battery
  • Nominal cost per stored AA about the same as Lead acid batteries. But if we take into account the technical limitations of lead batteries, the actual cost is much lower. In other words, considering all parameters, it is the most economical solution.

Efficiency
In many applications (especially off-grid solar and/or wind), energy efficiency can be critical. The round trip energy efficiency of an LFP battery is 92%. The charging process of lead-acid batteries becomes particularly inefficient when the 80% state of charge is reached, resulting in 50% efficiency or even less in solar systems where several days of backup power are required (battery operating at 70% to 100% charged state ). In contrast, an LFP battery will still achieve 90% efficiency under shallow discharge conditions.

Cell balancing and monitoring

LFP batteries have built-in balancing and cell monitoring. Up to 5 batteries can be paralleled and up to four 12V batteries or two 24V batteries can be connected in series so that a 48V battery pack of up to 1500Ah can be assembled. Cell balancing/monitoring cables can and must be connected to a battery management system (BMS).
Bluetooth app available to monitor cell voltage and temperature.

Battery Management System (BMS)
The BMS:
1.It generates an alarm whenever the voltage of a battery cell drops below 3,1V (2,85-3,15V adjustable).
2. Disconnects or turns off the load whenever the voltage of a battery drops below 2,8V (adjustable 2,6V-2,8V).
3. Stops the charging process whenever the voltage of a battery cell rises to more than 4,2V.
4. Shuts down the system whenever the temperature of a cell exceeds 50°C.

Requires one of these BMS:

  • VE.Bus BMS – recommended for systems with our inverter/chargers.
  • Victron miniBMS – recommended for use in small systems.
  • BMS 12/200 Battery Management System – recommended for use in automotive and marine systems with DC loads and alternators.
  • Smart BMS CL 12/100 – recommended for use in automotive and marine systems with DC loads and alternators.
