Differences between PWM and MPPT photovoltaic charge regulators

Comparison-Advantages in relation between PWM type and MPPT type load regulator

The MPPT charge regulators that are installed in the autonomous photovoltaic systems and determine the appropriate charge levels of the batteries create conditions for the operation of the photovoltaic systems, providing limited to minimal losses in their actual efficiencies.
A conventional PWM charge regulator distributes about 80% of the photovoltaic panel energy generated to the batteries, while about 20% of the remaining energy is lost because the simple PWM charge regulators do not detect the lamp's maximum power point.

The MPPT controller detects the maximum power point of the photovoltaic panel at all times. This means that through the electronic controlling circuit it has, it converts the potential difference of the photovoltaic panel (voltage) in relation to the voltage of the battery in current while at the same time it distributes all the produced energy to the battery. With this process and through the type charge regulator (MPPT) we utilize about 96% of the energy produced by the photovoltaic panel in relation to the 80% of the energy that we use from a type PWM charge regulator.

 See the following example:
A. Photovoltaic panels of installed power 1000Wp with a charge regulator PWM type give a total power of 1000watt X 0.8 efficiency ratio = 800W about 4.0KWh per 24 hours during the summer season.

B. Photovoltaic panels of installed power 1000Wp with a charge regulator type MPPTgive a total power of 1000watt X 0.96 efficiency ratio = 960W about 4.8KWh per 24 hours during the summer season.

Result: In the second case, using an MPPT charging regulator, we gain 800wh (ie approximately 16% extra of energy produced)
