Photovoltaics reached a record number of 2024 GW in RES for 80.

Unabated flood of new requests for projects, photovoltaic overproduction insistence on investments aimed at exports. That is, Energy from the sun.

The an additional 46 projects, with a capacity of 1,2 GW, were added within a month to the pending applications, in the vast majority of them photovoltaic (852 MW), raise to 47 GW the number of those waiting in the "queue" of the Administrator. Such a green potential corresponds to 3,5 times the needs of the system in RES projects for 2030 (24,5 GW, ESEK). It even exceeds the target of 2050. All these projects together, in the theoretical scenario that will be done, correspond to annual energy production around 70 TWh, when consumption has remained stagnant for years at 49,5 TWh. They are enough to cover a significant part of the green energy needed by a country with a strong industry, such as Germany of 85 million, where production from RES last year reached 263 TWh, and not someone like Greece, where the average demand for electricity moves to 6 GW and the maximum at 10 GW - and this only during peak hours, which are scarce.

This year alone Greece added 2,9 GW of PV, when last year's addition was no more than 1,6 GW. In other words, new projects increased within a year by 82% (!), with estimates calling for the site's total installed capacity to exceed 10 GW and the targets of the National Energy and Climate Plan to be reached much earlier, perhaps as early as 2026, four years before 2030.

According to what the competent ministry has estimated, next year we will have a total of approximately 16 GW of RES projects.

But in addition to the projects in operation, the requests are also increasing. Applications for 13 GW, mainly for photovoltaics, were added to the mountain of pending ADMIE files this year alone.

Greek performances may bring the country to 7th place in the pan-European list with the fastest growth rates of installed capacity in the EU (+82%), according to the Solar Europe report.

The average increase across Europe did not exceed 4% and was the slowest in recent years. For the first time in several years, investments in photovoltaics in the EU decreased by 13% on an annual basis, falling to 55 billion euro.

The CEO of Solar Europe Walburga Hemetsberger stated that "European politicians and System Operators should take this year's report as a yellow card for the photovoltaic sector». He pointed out that to meet the 2030 targets, around 70 GW would need to be plugged in each year, compared to 66 GW this year and 63 GW last year.
