Which Photovoltaic Battery is suitable for purchase? In the guide we will calculate the needs for batteries of an autonomous system. What we need to know is the capacity of the batteries we need in our system and what is the appropriate type of batteries.

Capacity. To find the required capacity of the batteries we will need, we divide the total consumption of all the appliances we have in our system (TV, refrigerator, lights and everything else we need to power) by 12. For example if all our appliances will consume 3600 Watt / h every 24 hours, and we have batteries 12V, need 3600 / h for 12V = 300 AH (amperes) of battery capacity.

Important! Because it is not good to fully discharge the batteries, you should double the above capacity! So in our example 600 AH capacity are required for 12V batteries.

We can connect as many batteries as needed to achieve the capacity we want. Finally, it is important to know that the larger the capacity of the batteries than required, the better for their life.

 

Choose type battery. Batteries should be deep discharged, with thick lead plates. In contrast, car and boat batteries have thin lead plates and are not suitable for deep charging because, after a few uses, they have completed their life cycle.

Caution! There are even differences between deep discharge batteries. It is better to buy a battery with a satisfactory life cycle than to choose a cheap solution which in the long run will prove to be much more expensive. Specifically, a cheap battery can do an A turnover and last X years, but an expensive battery that lasts Double years and Double turnover does NOT have twice the price of the first!
