United States-based FTC Solar has unveiled a new self-powered solar tracker that it says requires up to 36% less foundation than existing technologies and enables about 5% more energy production for a plot of land.

With a 500 MW deal already secured for several large-scale projects using Pioneer's new tracking technology, FTC Solar has announced the launch of its one module in portrait (1P) solar tracker solution.

FTC Solar, which has been active in the Australian market since it was founded in 2019, said Pioneer's proprietary design reduces volume by 18% or more, reducing capital and labor costs. It also has a shorter array length which reportedly allows for greater energy density per square meter of land.

"Pioneer achieves a total pile count reduction of 18%-36% per megawatt compared to current industry-leading volume solutions," said FTC Chief Technology Officer Nagendra Cherukupalli. "And with a high-density design, Pioneer enables up to 5% more energy production for the same location compared to the competition."

Designed for installations at scale, Pioneer's monitoring system accommodates 550W and 600W wide-format drives. FTC said the system supports all drive factors, including those over 2,4 meters long.

FTC said Pioneer's signature TT shape allows for larger openings, improved torsional stiffness and component alignment without the need for penetrations. Also, Pioneer's system has a 17,5% slope, while zero-grade storage allows for a reduced piling depth. The design also allows for the use of ground screw fastening systems to overcome difficult subsurface conditions.

The solar tracker will operate independently of the grid during holidays and is self-powered with a battery backup for up to three days.

The 500 MW agreement, signed with US-based developer Primoris Renewable Energy, sees FTC supply its solar tracker technology for multiple US project sites. Primoris is expected to use the new technology Tracker Pioneer 1P in many projects.

The monitoring system of Pioneer will make its public debut at the annual RE+ Power show in California this week. No details have yet been given on when it will be available in Australia.
