Scientists in Korea have built an organic solar cell that is reportedly able to prevent the build-up in photoactive layers. The device could be used for applications in buildings and vehicles.

Scientists at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) have built an organic solar cell. Based on polymer additives and claim to be able to solve the issue of performance degradation of large size organic solar cells.

"The spin coating method, a solution process mainly used at the laboratory research stage, creates a uniform mixture of photoactive layer as the solvent rapidly evaporates while the substrate is rotated at high speed," the researchers explained. “However, the large-scale, continuous process designed for industrial use caused degradation of solar cell performance because the rate of solvent evaporation of the solar cell material solution was too slow. Consequently, undesirable aggregation can form between the photoactive materials.'

The implementation

The Korean team designed the cell with tripartite photoactive layers. Which contain polymeric additives and, as a result, prevent build-up in photoactive layers. He also engineered nanoscale structure control to improve sunlight trapping.

The solar cell achieved a power conversion efficiency of 14,7%. Which according to the academics is 23,5% higher than that of a conventional binary system. The device also managed to retain 84% of its original performance after 1.000 hours at 85C.

"We have moved closer to the commercialization of organic solar cells by proposing the basic principle of a material solar cells capable of high-quality large-scale solution processing,” said KIST researcher Hae Jung Son. "Commercialization through follow-up research will enable environmentally friendly self-sufficient energy generation that can be easily applied to exterior walls of buildings and cars and also used as a power source for mobile and IoT devices."
