Scientists in China evaluated options with various approaches to integrate both solar energy collection and energy storage into a single device. Their paper describes several ways in which this could increase the efficiency of solar energy storage. It recommends that future research in this area should focus on incorporating materials with the highest energy storage capacity alongside the operation of solar energy collection.

Maximizing the efficiency of energy storage produced by intermittent renewable energy sources will be an ongoing challenge for scientists in the coming decades. And a challenge that will likely see a whole host of new technologies and materials introduced into increasingly niche markets.

Among the less explored approaches is the integrated solar energy collection and energy storage with a single-device solar-powered redox battery (SPRB). These promise to eliminate much of the additional power electronics and other equipment needed to transfer energy from a PV system to a battery. Which also means cheaper and more efficient energy storage. So far, a few different approaches to building such a device have emerged. And while progress has been made, none have yet achieved the type of performance that would garner interest from commercial developers.

Research on solar batteries

Scientists led by China's Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology conducted a comprehensive review of recent progress with SPRB solar cells. Focusing on the development of high-performance dye materials, the photoelectrochemical performance of different electrode materials, and the mechanism and structure of such devices. Their research and recommendations are found in the paper Integrated Photovoltaic Charging and Energy Storage Systems: Mechanism, Optimization, and Future , published in Small.

The paper notes that pigment materials and semiconductor photocatalysts have shown the most promising results so far and suggests a number of strategies focused on improved light absorption, charge separation, energy matching and overall device optimization. He also states that working with materials exhibiting high energy storage capacity will be key to the development of commercial types. If this practice can be exploited, the study identifies multiple applications, including capacitors, batteries solid-state, microdevices and smart wearable devices that could all benefit from such an integrated technology.
